Glossary (A to Z)

Term Definition
Baroque

The Baroque (US /bəˈrk/ or UK /bəˈrɒk/) is often thought of as a period of artistic style which used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur in sculpture, painting, architecture, literature, dance, theatre, and music.

Cello

The cello (/ˈɛl/ CHEL-oh; plural cellos or celli) or violoncello (/ˌvələnˈɛl/ VY-ə-lən-CHEL-oh;[1]Italian pronunciation: [vjolonˈtʃɛllo]) is a bowed or plucked string instrument with four strings tuned in perfect fifths.

Viola

The viola (/viˈlə/;[1]Italian pronunciation: [ˈvjɔːla]) is a string instrument that is bowed or played with varying techniques. It is slightly larger than a violin and has a lower and deeper sound.

Violin

The violin is a wooden string instrument in the violin family. It is the smallest and highest-pitched instrument in the family in regular use. Smaller violin-type instruments are known, including the violino piccolo and the kit violin, but these are virtually unused in the 2010s.
